Matthew Bernard Levinger

Matthew Levinger is Research Professor of International Affairs at the Elliott School of International Affairs, George Washington University. At the Elliott School, he directs the National Security Studies Program (an executive education program for senior military and civilian officials) and the Master of International Policy and Practice program. Among his previous positions, he was a senior program officer at the U.S. Institute of Peace, founding director of the Academy for Genocide Prevention at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, and a William C. Foster Fellow at the U.S. Department of State, where he worked to improve U.S. government strategies for preventing mass atrocities. Before moving to Washington, DC, he taught Modern European History for fourteen years at Stanford University and Lewis & Clark College. Both in his academic research and in his policy-oriented work, Levinger has sought to explain the roots of radical political violence, in order to facilitate creative approaches to preventing and resolving deadly conflict. He received his B.A. from Haverford College and his Ph.D. in History from the University of Chicago.
