Nancy Riecken teaches college-level writing, literature, and public speaking. She encourages literacy skills by writing for children and adults. Proceeds from the sale of her Kindle edition books support non-profit organizations. Riecken hopes that her fiction, poetry, narrative essays, and academic writing will help people engage with their own and other communities and cultures. In a world where people from diverse regions are able to connect more and more closely with each other, developing clear communication skills is critical to everyone's future.
Riecken points out to her students that "It's been said that your opinion is worth nothing if you can't clearly explain and support it. When we have the opportunity to read and understand what we read, and then speak and write in reaction to what we read, then we can make the world a better place." Opening our minds and our hearts to multiple perspectives helps us do so.
Available and forthcoming books include children's stories, an adult novel, a series of "gallery installation" poetry books, and essays. In addition, a particularly interesting edition of literacy games included six of her literacy games (Let the Games Begin!: Engaging Students with Field-tested Interactive Information Literacy Instruction, 2011, Theresa R. McDevitt, Editor, Neal-Shuman Publishers). Riecken is managing editor of her college's academic journal, The Atrium (http://nwi.ivytech.edu/atrium/)
