Peter Douglas Laurie

Peter Laurie was born in 1944 in Barbados. He was educated at the universities of Oxford, West Indies, and Toronto, and was a career diplomat for Barbados for thirty years. His last diplomatic assignment was ambassador to the United States, 1983-87. He was Head of the Barbados Foreign Service from 1989 to 1999 when he took early retirement.

After retiring he focused on writing. He began by writing four plays - two of them prize-winners.

Three illustrated children's books featuring a cat called Mauby: "Mauby's Big Adventure", "Mauby's Quest for the Magic Flower" and “Mauby and the Hurricane”, published by Macmillan Caribbean and available on Amazon.

Three books on Barbados: "The Barbadian Rum Shop", "Barbados: an Island Portrait" and "Barbados: Caribbean Street Food", and one book on West Indies cricket, "The Glory Days:25 Great West Indian Cricketers". All published by Macmillan and available on Amazon.

Also available on Amazon: "Caribbean One-Pot Cookbook", a collection of his humorous newspaper columns, "The Joys of Weird", two of his one-act plays, "Waiting and the Confession", and a contemporary romance "Dawn of Freedom".

He was a newspaper columnist for over a decade and still writes an occasional column in the Barbados Today online newspaper.

He enjoys cooking, collecting paintings, and jazz. Married with one son.
