Bruce D. Haynes

Bruce D. Haynes (1960- ) was born in Harlem, New York, to a family of social workers. After receiving his doctorate at the City University of NY (1995), he taught sociology and African-American Studies at Yale University (1995-2001). He joined the faculty of the University of California, Davis in 2001 where he is Professor of Sociology int he Department of Sociology. Haynes also holds affiliations in Geography, Community and Human Development, Religious Studies, and Jewish Studies. His research interests include segregation, suburbanization, the black middle class, race and racialization, and community organization. Dr. Haynes has appeared on NPR numerous times including on Capital Public Radio’s Insight with Vicki Gonzalez and the Bay Area's KQED’s Forum with Michael Krasny. Haynes has also appeared on PBS and has written for ESPN and The Forward. His most recent book, The Soul of Judaism: Jews of African Descent in America (New York University Press, 2018), won the 2019 Albert J. Raboteau Book Prize for Best Book in Africana Religions. It was also noted by the Jewish Book Council.
