Judith S. Stern

Professor Judith S. Stern is internationally known for her research and for translating science for the public. Stern is an accomplished public speaker on radio, TV and at scientific meetings. She learned public speaking as a cherry pie baking champion for 4-H. Two popular messages are "Eat dessert first" and "Chocolate should be an honorary vitamin" - she has to eat a little every day. Stern was a contributing editor to Vogue Magazine and an advisor to Prevention Magazine. She has written over 160 popular articles. Her first book was "How to be Slim and Healthy on the Fast Food Diet." Her latest book, Obesity, ABC-CLIO, 2009) is a reference book for the public and libraries. Chapter 5 presents 55 short bios from celebrities like Jared Fogle who lost lots of weight eating Subway sandwiches and Oprah Winfrey who has said...if there was a pill, I would have it. There are bios from famous scientists like the former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop and historical figures like A. Lavoisier.

Stern is a Distinguished Professor at the University of California, Davis. She has published about 270 papers in the scientific literature on a weight control, exercise and dietary supplements. A few of her honors include: Member of Institute of Medicine of The National Academy of Sciences; Fellow of American Association for Advancement of Sciences; Recipient of California Dietetic Association's, Excellence in Research Award; The Obesity Society's Richard L Atkinson and Judith S Stern Distinguished Public Service Award.
