After graduating from the University of Illinois with a degree in mechanical engineering, I began my career as a civilian working on various R&D projects for the Navy. Eventually, I became bored with the job because my role involved very little hands-on work. I then left that job to pursue a doctoral degree in Finance at Indiana University. After completing the program, I taught at the University of Wyoming for a few years and then moved on to Washington and Lee University (W&L). W&L is the perfect school for me because it attracts extremely high quality students and it maintains very strong ties to the top of the investment world.

I first started thinking about writing book(s) on stock valuation several years ago, when I realized that most books either were unnecessarily complex and impractical or were lacking in their development of valuation fundamentals. I then undertook a study of how great asset managers approach the valuation process. One result of that study was that I developed a much greater appreciation for the amount of work that goes into properly valuing stocks. Another result was that I was able to write a book that I think fills a much-needed gap in the investments literature. I am currently working on a second book that is geared toward anyone who is saving for retirement. In that book, I address various widespread myths about investing and seek to give individuals the basic knowledge they need to best prepare for investments.
