I grew up in central Iowa under the guidance of a father in the newspaper and radio business. Dad was a great communicator and encouraged his six children to learn to do likewise. I began writing for our smalltown newspaper while still in high school. I majored in journalism in college, graduating from Iowa State. My first full-time newspaper job was with the Cedar Rapids, Ia., Gazette. I was there only a short time before being drafted into the Army. After serving the Army, I joined the sports staff of the Lincoln Journal Star in Nebraska. I was the outdoor sports editor, writing about fishing, hunting and the like. It was there I fell in love with Labradors and had my first opportunity to own one of those beautiful and intelligent creations.

Eight years later, I joined The Associated Press as sports and news writer for Nebraska. I held the state sports editor position for 15 years until moving to the broadcast desk. I spent nearly 10 years writing broadcast news until retiring in 2005. I spent the next six years as a mortgage loan officer, retiring again in 2011 to spend more time writing.

I married my high school sweetheart in 1969. I can proudly say I am still married to her, and love her more today than I could have dreamt I could love anyone. I along with my best friend and the love of my life, Georgie, have two children, Tim and Mandy.
