Steve was born in 1952 into a family of avid readers in Alcorn County, Mississippi. His father read engineering manuals, science fiction and western novels while his Pentecostal mother preferred the King James Version of the Bible for a daily dose of piety. When he was nine years old, he stumbled upon Stephen Crane's "Red Badge of Courage" and after reading it several times, decided that he desperately wanted to be a writer when he grew up. Forty years later he published his first book and though it was a reasonable effort, the book was a far cry from The Red Badge of Courage disguised as a 135-page self-help book. A few years later, he had added five professional papers to his writer's portfolio.
Still, southerner's love a good story, well told, so Steve kept storing up experiences and memories collected during his travels around the world as a Air Force officer. After buying several books on writing, Steve decided to follow advice set out in those "how to" books and write about what he knows and is passionate about: the military and flying. Steve retired from the military in 2006 and after several business ventures, including a green energy collaboration with Vanderbilt University, decided it was time to get serious about writing.
