Nancy Harvey started weaving in 1972 and joined the Sacramento Weavers Guild in the early 1970s. Her multi-faceted textile career as an author, lecturer, workshop leader, tapestry artist, and video producer began in 1980 and her three widely read books on tapestry weaving remained in print for over 30 years. In 2015 her extremely popular book, 'Tapestry Weaving: A Comprehensive Study Guide" was picked-up for republication by Echo Point Books and Media. Note: In 1990 Nancy’s two earlier books (“The Guide to Successful Tapestry Weaving” and “Patterns for Tapestry Weaving-Projects & Techniques”) were combined and the content was greatly enhanced and expanded. In 1991 the result “Tapestry Weaving: A comprehensive Study Guide” was released.
As a Tapestry artist, her work has been displayed as part of many local and regional textile conferences. Invitational and juried showcases/gallery exhibitions include:
"American Tapestry Today" (Palo Alto CA) sponsored by the American Tapestry Alliance;
"Southeast Fiber Forum" an invitational exhibit (Atlanta GA);
"Woven for the Wall" a juried exhibition (Mendocino CA);
"Convergence" (Portland OR);
"Fiber Alaska" an international juried exhibit (Anchorage AK);
"Tapestries with a Floral Theme"-an invitational juried exhibition (New York City NY);
"Tapestry and Ikat Weaving" a 3-person invitational exhibition featured Nancy Harvey's work along with the tapestry work of Victor Jacoby and Mary Rawcliffe Colton (Chico CA);
"Contemporary Handweaving" National Invitational Show Haggin Museum (Stockton CA);
"Tapestries" at the Selo Shevel Gallery in Ann Arbor MI.
Nancy has been invited to serve as a judge and/or juror at many national weaving conferences including the "Small Expressions Exhibit" at Convergence in Washington DC.
In addition to her frequent participation as a workshop leader at many regional, national, and international textile conferences, in 1985 the Australian/New Zealand Crafts Council invited her to conduct workshops for 9 weeks across both countries. She also served as a contributing editor to Knit 'n Style Magazine.
Since 1982 she has completed many custom-designed tapestry commissions for large corporations, private homes, and small businesses. Her objective is always to create a technically excellent piece with a subject that reflects the client's interest while also enriching the environment for which it is designed.
In 1985 she combined her love of hand-work with her business and teaching skills (thanks to her years with IBM as an Education Development Analyst) and formed Victorian Video Productions. The major objective of the company was to preserve the textile hand craft techniques of the past, and to provide quality instructional material in the format of how-to-videos. As a video producer and editor, she created over 80 instructional videos, many of which have received awards at national and international film and video festivals. In addition, she is the on-camera workshop instructor on the following videos/DVDs: "Tapestry Weaving - Level I", "Tapestry Weaving - Level II", "Tapestry Techniques for Rug Weaving - Master the Interlock", and "Tapestry Techniques for Fabric for Clothing". In 1998 she sold Victorian Video Productions and its entire craft video series to Yarn Barn of Lawrence KS, where they are still available in DVD format today.
If that isn't enough, she also designs and weaves one of a kind clothing.
