Arnold Mann

Arnold Mann has been writing about medicine for a national audience for the past 30 years. His cover stories in Time and USA Weekend magazines have earned him television and radio appearances and recognition as one of the leading medical journalists in the country.

His cover story on neurosurgeon Keith Black for Time’s 1997 Heroes of Medicine special issue became a book, with Mann as co-author with Dr. Black. The book, "Brain Surgeon: A Doctor's Encounters with Mortality and Miracles," was nominated for an NAACP Image Award, for Best Nonfiction Book, 2010. Other Time features, most notably his environmental expose on Southwest Airlines’ mold-infested San Antonio reservations center, and his series of USA Weekend cover stories on the threat of toxic mold in homes, schools, and apartment buildings, have made him a leading reporter in the field of environmental health.

Besides his feature work for Time and USA Weekend, Mann served as personal writer for the Director of the National Cancer Institute and oversaw publication of the Institute’s annual Progress Report to Congress.

In his new book, "They’re Poisoning Us, From The Gulf War to the Gulf of Mexico," Mann takes on a national health problem that has disabled millions who have suffered toxic exposures, rendering many housebound. It’s a difficult learning curve for everyone, pitting doctor against doctor, worker against employer, homeowner against builder and insurer, activist against industry, Gulf War veterans against the VA and the DOD, and pretty much everyone against the government, while many of the sick wind up living as environmental hermits; waiting for salvation, like the masses caught in the Limbo of Dante's Inferno.

In this new book, Mann takes us on a fascinating journey, through the human side of the story, through the controversy, and into the research labs, where treatments are finally emerging.

In his spare time, Mr. Mann can sometimes be found on the golf course, where his father taught him about life.
