Josef Michael Westheim (1958 - ) was born in Augusta, Georgia, then the family moved to central Illinois where he remained for many years. He received Bachelor of Science degrees in Chemistry and Mathematics from Illinois State University, and a Doctorate of Philosophy degree in Physical Chemistry from North Carolina State University.
His research in solar energy sent him to Berlin, Germany for 6 years, and witnessed the fall of the Berlin wall.
After 12 years as a research chemist, he settled down to teach mathematics and chemistry in Illinois and Florida.
