James B. Norman

James Norman is an architectural photographer and historian, and is the

Cultural Resources Manager for the Oregon Department of Transportation. He has documented

more than 100 of Oregon’s most significant historic resources for the Historic American

Engineering Record (HAER) and the Historic American Building Survey (HABS), and was the

official photographer for the 1999 HAER/NPS Willamette River Bridges Recordation Project and

for the National Historic Landmark nomination for the Oregon Coast Bridges. He has authored

several books on Oregon’s architectural and engineering heritage, including the seminal Historic

Highway Bridges of Oregon (ODOT 1985, OHS 1989 (2nd ed)), Portland’s Architectural

Heritage (OHS 1986), Oregon Covered Bridges: A Study for the 1989-90 Oregon Legislature

(ODOT 1988), and Oregon Main Street: A Rephotographic Survey (OHS 1994). He also served

as principal photographer and producer of the third edition of The Portland Bridge Book (Urban

Adventures Press, 2006) by Sharon Wood Wortman. Mr. Norman’s documentary photography

has been widely published, and is included in the permanent collections of the Oregon Historical

Society, the Smithsonian Institute and the Library of Congress. His fine art photography is

included in the permanent collections of the Portland Art Museum and the Seattle Art Museum.
