Edward T. Schmid BA, BFA, MFA
Glassblower by trade; artist, author and instructor by profession, Ed began blowing glass as a student at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, in 1984. While completing his first degree in Germanic Languages and Literature, he also finished his undergraduate studies with a BFA in glass in 1988.
In 1990 he earned his MFA in glass from The Ohio State University.
In 1993, he published his first book: “Ed’s Big Handbook of Glassblowing”. After that, he wrote and published: “Advanced Glassworking Techniques” in 1997, and “Beginning Glassblowing” in 1998. He also penned “The Glassworker’s Bathroom Reader” in 2006.
He is currently working on another book project: “Introduction to Venetian Glassblowing”, in addition to owning and operating his own business, Glass Mountain Press & Studios in Bellingham, Washington.
He divides his time between family and work: namely blowing and sculpting hot glass as well as teaching classes and workshops all over the world, including The Pratt Fine Arts Center in Seattle.
His artwork is inspired by science, nature, people and the traditions and history of glassmaking. His work is in numerous collections and museums across the globe.
