Whiskey Whiskey Papa
By: Airforce Magazine from Ottawa, Ontario
W.W. “Weldy” Phipps was a man who thrived on challenge and had the intestinal fortitude to overwhelm the most horrific events of war or the trials of peacetime. This book is laced with humorous anecdotes in civil aviation that tend to counteract the vicious beatings, dog attacks, starvation and general privation of his wartime captivity. Not only did Phipps re- design the P-38 Lightning for aerial survey work, but later re- jigged the Piper Super Cub for operation in the High Arctic.
His flying years are filled with daring rescues and feats of airmanship that will leave readers white-knuckled. Who else could repair a demolished undercarriage on northern Ellesmere Island with an old bed frame? Or fix a broken tail section with two ski poles? A lost tail-wheel with a shovel? A blown propeller oil seal with a corn flakes box?
It should come as no surprise at the end to discover that the man known as “Whiskey Whiskey Papa” was showered with honors for his Arctic work - Order of Canada, Trans- Canada McKee Trophy, NWT Brotherhood of Silver Wings, the Order of Polaris, the Order of Flight, and membership in the Aviation Hall of Fame.
It’s a good read that is hard to put down as the reader works through the many escapades. You’ll read it many times. Fred Aldworth
