Some people start writing very early in life because they have an exceptional talent for it. That’s not me. When I was young, I had nothing of value to say. I didn’t publish my first book until I was in my early 50’s. By then my education, observation, and life experiences had taught me some valuable lessons that were worth sharing. I write to use what I have learned to help other people deal with their own issues.

My first book was SURVIVAL GUIDE FOR PARENTS: How to Avoid Screwing Up Your Kids or Losing Your Own Sanity. I have two degrees in psychology, which helped me considerably in raising my own daughter. I also had the opportunity to watch other people’s parenting and observe the results they got. I decided to do some things differently and then see how that turned out. I was very pleased to see that my own daughter was a person I not only loved, but liked and respected. I decided my methods (and my sense of humor) were worth sharing with other parents. I was thrilled when this book became a best seller.

The next book I published was SUCCESSFUL DIVORCE AND SINGLE PARENTING. I wrote this one because I had to. I just had to get the story out into the world that divorce doesn’t have to be painful for everyone and harmful to the kids. My ex-husband and I had formed a very effective parenting partnership, and I wanted to show other people how to do it.

I recently published THE DIAMOND IN THE ONION SUIT. It uses non-human characters to tell a story about human empowerment. Oddly enough, it was the first book I wrote. Why did I wait so long to publish it? It’s next to impossible to get a major publisher to take on an allegory. There’s no inherent demand for allegories. Either they catch on or they don’t. I had to publish it myself, so I had to wait for technology to make it affordable (ebook and print on demand). Maybe it will become a best seller like Jonathan Livingston Seagull did in the 70’s. That’s my goal.
