Raymond Beauchemin was born in Holyoke, Massachusetts, and after a career as an editor at several New England newspapers moved to Montreal, where he edited several anthologies of Quebec literature in English, organized a successful and popular reading series, taught journalism and ran a small publishing house, Hochelaga Press, publisher of John A. Williams's award-winning collection of poetry, Safari West. He was foreign editor of The Gazette for many years. Raymond lived in Abu Dhabi for several years in the late oughts, where he was a senior editor at The National.
