Retired from Western Washington University in June 2015, Judith A. Deiro, Ph.D. has worked as a professor, counselor, and education consultant for over 45 years in the Human Services field. She was a certified Chemical Dependency Counselor (CDC) and taught others to become certified CDCs. Judy has a soft spot in her heart for those who suffer from the disease of alcoholism---both the alcoholic and those who love them. Resulting from her years of experience as a chemical dependency counselor, she has authored two small books. How Serious is My Loved One’s Drinking Problem and Now That Someone I Love Has Quit Drinking, What Should I Expect?
With a keen interest in prevention of high-risk behaviors in young people, Judy researched appropriate roles teachers can play in fostering the healthy social and emotional development of young people. As a result of this interest, she has authored two books describing how teachers can build resilience in their students, Teaching with Heart, and Teachers DO Make a Difference.
Judy hopes to encourage more adults to develop trusting bonds that facilitate healthy social and emotional development in young people. As a consultant, she has given numerous presentations nation-wide and globally on healthy teaching and parenting strategies for the prevention of high-risk behaviors in young people. Judy was one of three nationwide certified trainer-of- trainers for the nationally recognized Developing Capable Young People program by H. Stephen Glenn.
During retirement, Judy enjoys working out, getting lost in an arts and craft projects, writing---and particularly---kibitzing about psychology and politics and engaging in community activities that promote social justice. Judy is a recipient of the Washington State Exemplary Women in Community Colleges award, Full-Time Faculty Excellence award and the Washington State Chemical Dependency Educator of the Year award.
