He retired from a career in the private practice of dentistry in 2010 and became certified as a personal trainer, though he now spends his time running marathons, playing golf, writing, painting, and playing with grandchildren.
Since 2005, he has run 91 marathons and has qualified for the Boston marathon over 30 of them. He achieved USATF All American status in long distance running in 2007. He runs races annually.
He belongs to Royal North Devon Golf Club at Westward Ho!, the club with the oldest seaside course in England, and was formerly a member of Royal Dornoch Golf Club in Scotland. He is three-time club champion of Kenwood Country Club in Cincinnati and he has qualified for and competed in USGA championships. He has won locally and on the club level, though his most treasured moments on the golf course came when playing matches against Scots at their clubs in the Home of Golf.

Dr. Kroeger founded the Islay Single Malt Marathon, which is now held annually in September. It continues to raise funds for the Islay high school’s mission trip.
Dr. Kroeger began The Ohio Barn Project in 2012, after being inspired by an old, weathered barn to capture Ohio's past by doing paintings of old barns and documenting their stories in essays. After traveling throughout the state, he captured at least one old barn in each of Ohio's 88 counties and finished a book in 2021. The History Press published Historic Barns of Ohio, which features 88 barn paintings and their stories. 64 images are in color. The book is also available directly through the History Press.
