A. D. Amar

Dr. A. D. Amar (Amar Dev Amar) teaches and researches in managing organizations as Professor of Management at the Stillman School of Business, Seton Hall University, South Orange, NJ 07079, USA. He received a 2013 Carolyn Dexter Finalist Award of the Academy of Management for his paper on enhancing emotional intelligence of CEOs by practicing meditation. The paper also was selected a Best Paper of the AOM 2013 conference. His 2014 work on enhancing self-perceived leadership skills of senior managers by practicing meditation was selected as a Best Paper of the AOM 2014 conference. He was the 2013 Stillman Star of the Stillman School of Business. In 2010, he was awarded the NJBIA Bright Idea Award in Management by NJPRO Foundation of the New Jersey Business and Industry Association (NJBIA) for his publication on leading without authority in the context of knowledge organizations in the Harvard Business Review.

Dr. Amar’s academic training and experience have their roots in sciences, engineering, production, operations, business, organizational behavior, and leadership. He holds a B.Sc. in Production Engineering (PEC, India), an MS in Industrial & Management Engineering (Montana State), MBA in Management (Baruch), and MPhil and PhD in Business (City Univ of NY). Over the years, with the shifting paradigms of management, internationalization of business, changing needs of management profession, the rise of knowledge/technology in business processes, and the emphasis on values in decision-making, Dr. Amar focused his research agenda and publications in these new areas. He has made a lot of adaptations and updates to the well-accepted theories and practices of management to suit the needs of managing contemporary organizations. His works, publications, and research integrate leadership, psychology, and holistic processes to manage individuals, groups, and organizations.

Dr. Amar has worked and consulted for many organizations in manufacturing, design and development, technology, control systems, consumer durables, and machine tools. Some of these names for whom he has worked, in various capacities over many years, include Orisun Machine Tools, Vornado—Store Decor, Inc., Arkwin Industries, Inc., Teledyne Pacific Industrial Controls, R. W. Scott & Co., Indian Standard Metal Co. Ltd, Photophone Equipments Ltd. (Associate of RCA), Cinesales Corporation, Khosla Sales (India) Private Ltd., Hydrocraft, Inc., Research Foundation of the City University of New York, Human Resource Administration, City of New York, Social Security Administration, US Postal Service, The Institute of Work, VW/Audi Group, and General Motors Company.

He has designed small and large hardware and software systems for control and automation of human and machine activities. He has taught, consulted, held management positions and trained managers in business and public sector undertakings in the USA, India, United Kingdom, Russia, and Poland. He has served as external examiner on several doctoral committees. Among his numerous publications is a book, titled Managing Knowledge Workers (Westport, CT: Quorum Books; 2002), written for managers to provide them theory and practice of how to manage knowledge workers and knowledge organizations to get innovation and higher productivity. He has written many practitioner and scholarly, peer-reviewed articles in journals like the Harvard Business Review, Organizational Dynamics, European Journal of Innovation Management, IIE Transactions, Production and Inventory Management Journal, Computers & Industrial Engineering, International Journal of Production Research, The Mid-Atlantic Journal of Business, etc., World Economic Outlook (an edited volume), and two monographs on Objective Assessment of Operational Reliability of Passenger Cars.

Dr. Amar has been department chairperson, Director of MBA Assessment, Director of Seton Hall University Comprehensive Achievement Program (SHUCAP), Director Management Development Center, and the Editor and Director of the Mid-Atlantic Journal of Business for 12 years. He serves, or has served, on several boards of journals and professional societies. He is a member of the Academy of Management and Beta Gamma Sigma and a former member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE), APICS The Association for Operations Management, the Institute for Operations Research and Management Sciences, and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM).
