The common thread to my career has been publishing. I’ve written two books, worked for two different publishing companies, held the title of Assistant Editor, Senior Editor, Editor, Web Site Manager, Web Director, and now President of my own business.
I decided to start my own Web design business when my family relocated from San Francisco to Chicago. I’ve been blessed with some pretty great jobs thus far. It would be pretty hard to top my job as Web Director for Chronicle Books, a position that allowed me to peruse gorgeous art, design, cooking, pop culture, and travel books every day. And before that, my role as Senior Editor for HOW allowed me to discover new designers, learn design history, and travel all over writing, researching, and spreading the good word of HOW.
But it’s been working for myself that has exceeded my expectations. I’ve scored some fantastic clients, including best-selling author Sara Paretsky, Oscar-winning musicians The Swell Season, McEvoy Ranch, The Euphrates Institute, Cypress String Quartet, FLOR, HarperOne, 510 Families, Wildcat Golf Academy, Boston Body Pilates, actress Julia Sweeney and dozens more. My business has evolved over the seven years I’ve been in business for myself. When I started, I was coding my own HTML. I now favor Magento and WordPress and hire programmers to handle coding. With the help of my team, I take on pretty much everything else, though, including wireframing, design, site build, launch, search engine optimization, marketing, and more.
