Michael Smylie

Mike Smylie is a maritime historian concentrating on the fishing industry and fishing and other working vessels. He has written, and continues to write, widely on the subject for various magazines including Classic Boat, The Boatman, Watercraft, Maritime Heritage and Maritime Life and Traditions, the latter in which he also has written of the fishing craft of India. Classic Boat has run numerous articles on both British fishing vessels and those of the European continental waters, as well as various other series. He also occasionally writes for the weekly newspaper Fishing News as well as contributing to the European Maritime Heritage newsletter. He is a member of The Society for Nautical Research, The South West Maritime History Society, The Yachting Journalists' Association, The Coble and Keelboat Society and the Anglesey Antiquarians.

He is also known as Kipperman and travels the country with his exhibition about herring and his mobile smokehouse.
