Sam Crowell

I started teaching in a small school in Appalachia, seeing teaching as a kind of engaged service to the world. My experiences there seeded my interest in educational alternatives, and an education that responds to real human needs and that transforms lives in the most profound ways. Now as a professor, I am the founder and co-director of the MA in Holistic and Integrative Education and the Center for Holistic and Integrative Learning. As a holistic educator, I am a advocate of the artistry of teaching and an in-spirited education.

I sometimes describe myself as a "reconceptualist" because I tend to focus on reframing our perceptions of educational practice, exploring especially the philosophical implications of quantum field theories, adaptive open systems, chaos and complexity sciences and the neurosciences for a new kind of educational practice. I am also actively engaged with Education For Sustainable Development and the Earth Charter which provides an ethical, ecological and social purpose for education and promotes a global commitment to these inter-related needs of our time. I hope you enjoy my books and they inspire and inform in ways that touch the heart and challenge the mind.
