Sylvia Ross

California writer Sylvia Ross aka Stephenson Ross is the author of three historical novels: ACTS OF KINDNESS, ACTS OF CONTRITION, EAST OF THE GREAT VALLEY, and ILSA ROHE, and she also published a book of short works, poems and drawings entitled: ACORNS AND ABALONE. She is also the author/illustrator of two culturally themed children's books: LION SINGER and BLUE JAY GIRL.

Her work can be found in the following anthologies: THE DIRT IS RED HERE; SPRING SALMON, HURRY TO ME; THE ILLUMINATED LANDSCAPE, A SIERRA NEVADA ANTHOLOGY; LEAVES FROM THE VALLEY OAK; SEAWEED, SALMON, AND MANZANITA CIDER; and SIERRA WONDERS.

Ross has performed readings of her work at museum and university venues in her home state. She contributed historical text for the Oakland Museum's California Native People's exhibit. Her work was featured in the touring exhibit: SING ME YOUR STORY, DANCE ME HOME, 2008-2011. She created the cover design for the poet John Dofflemyer's award winning book, PROCLAIMING SPACE. She has been a long-time contributor to the quarterly magazine, 'News from Native California.'

An Oregon Trail descendant on both sides of her family. Through her mother's lineage, Ross is a Yokuts Indian descendant. Ross was raised in West Los Angeles where she attended parochial schools. Early on, the California writer, Sylvia Ross, worked as a cell painter for Walt Disney Productions in Burbank. After her marriage, she and her husband moved to the Central Valley where she taught in a school attended by the children from the Tule River Indian Reservation. She and her husband live in Exeter, California and are the parents of four sons.
