Ilana DeBare is author of "Shaken Loose," speculative fiction published by Hypatia Press in July 2023.
While Shaken Loose is her first published novel, it's not her first novel altogether. (Um, FOUR unpublished novels before this? Let's just say they started out bad and got better.)
A former newspaper reporter at the San Francisco Chronicle and Sacramento Bee, Ilana also worked as a communications director for her local Audubon Society. She was the founding board chair of the Julia Morgan School for Girls, an all-girl middle school in Oakland, California. Her experience helping start Julia Morgan led her to write "Where Girls Come First: The Rise, Fall, and Surprising Revival of Girls' Schools" (Tarcher/Penguin, 2004). She lives in Oakland with her husband Sam and their astonishingly fluffy cat Bowie.
