Richard Schilling

Richard Schilling was born and raised in Lincoln. He’s a graduate of the University of Nebraska Lincoln. His passion for painting began at the age of twelve when he was invited to take lessons in watercolor at the University of Nebraska. Since then he has established his own style and reputation through his decades of experience and several hundred paintings.

For many years Schilling was a missionary dentist abroad and a part‑time officer for Holland America Cruise Line. These rich experiences provided opportunities to paint scenes on six continents. He is the author of eight art books. His adventures abroad are chronicled in his best-selling book, Watercolor Journeys. Recent books are Portraits of the Prairie: The Land That Inspired Willa Cather (University of Nebraska Press), The Forgotten Edge of Russia (WestBow Press), and Portraits of the Sandhills In Words and Watercolors (Chinook Wind Books).

Today, he paints most every day, and oversees the Smiles Without Borders Foundation that he and two others created to provide free dental care for needy children.
