Robert S. Burrell works as a Senior Research Fellow with Global and National Security Institute at the University of South Florida. From 2020-2024, he taught irregular warfare at Joint Special Operations University. During the years 2011-2014, he served as the U.S. Special Operations Command Editor-in-Chief for doctrine on irregular warfare. During academic years 2002-2004, he taught both Navy and Marine Corps history at U.S. Naval Academy. A retired Marine with multiple combat tours, he is a Asia-Pacific expert with twelve years living and working in Japan, Korea, Philippines, and Thailand, as well as a diplomatic tour at the U.S. Embassy in Australia. He has a PhD in history from the University of Warwick and master’s degrees from San Diego State University and the U.S. Naval War College.
