Dr. Timmen L. Cermak was born on the shores of Lake Erie east of Cleveland in 1945. He graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University and Case Western Reserve Medical School. After two years general practice in the Indian Health Service, he completed psychiatric residency and a post-doctoral fellowship in neurophysiology at Stanford. In 1983, while serving as medical director of the inpatient drug and alcohol unit at the San Francisco VA, he co-founded the National Association for Children of Alcoholics. Dr. Cermak is a Past-President of the California Society of Addiction Medicine and chaired the Youth Work Group for California’s Blue Ribbon Commission on Marijuana Policy. He currently serves on the Bureau of Cannabis Control’s Cannabis Advisory Committee and the Department of Health Care Service’s Prop 64 Advisory Committee. He published multiple books on adult children of alcoholics and codependency before Marijuana: What’s a Parent to Believe? with Hazelden in 2003 and From Bud to Brain: A Psychiatrist’s View of Marijuana, released in May, 2020 by Cambridge University Press. From Bud to Brain provides basic science information about cannabis to healthcare professionals, educators and the general public.

Tim and his wife raised two daughters and currently live north of San Francisco. He has retired from an active clinical practice of psychiatry and addiction medicine and continues to write despite being legally blind.
