Kate Hill

Kate Hill was born in London in 1965. She attended comprehensive schools in Pimlico and Camden, followed by Kingsway Princeton Sixth Form College. At Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, she graduated in philosophy, politics and economics. She worked with children on an after- school project, and at the International Centre for Child Studies in Bristol on research into child development. Kate began this book after their brother’s death at the age of twenty. Her book inspired further research at the University of Oxford, where she had worked with the Centre for Suicide Research and Samaritans. She also edited the SIBBS (Support in Bereavement for Brothers and Sisters) quarterly newsletter and contact network of The Compassionate Friends, and put together an information pack on bereavement from sudden death for Samaritans.

Kate Hill died of a haemorrhage, in an unexpected brain bleed, in 1994.

This new edition of Kate Hill’s book, The Long Sleep, is by Anna Hill. The book honours the original work while updating it for today’s youth. It reflects current research and support, while staying true to Kate Hill’s authorship and values. This was a collaborative effort, with input from young people and professionals alike, including an editorial team composed of Ailsa Snaith and Andrew Parsons, and a review by Alexandra Pitman.
