Gil Garcetti

Gil Garcetti was born in Los Angeles and became the Los Angeles County District Attorney in 1992. He served for eight years in that position and a total of 32 year in that office.

While teaching at the Kennedy School at Harvard University, his first photo book, IRON: THE ERECTING OF THE WALT DISNEY CONCERT HALL was released in 2002. That book resulted in his first major photo exhibition, a 99 photo exhibition at Washington D.C.'s National Building Musuem. Since then, Gil has published eight additional books and has had exhibitions around the world including the United Nations, UNESCO, and numerous galleries and museums.

His most recent book, PROTEA: THE MAGIC AND THE MYSTERY, is the first time Gil has collaborated with a colleague. The book focuses solely on one species of flower, the nearly three million old protea found in South Africa. The flowers photographed were grown in San Deigo, Ventura, and Los Angeles counties and in Maui. Only natural light was used for the photographs.Gil was the photographer and producer of the book.

His colleague, Larry Livingston, was the dean of the USC Thornton School of Music for sixteen years before becoming the chair of the conducting department and the Music Director of all the Thornton School orchestras. Larry wrote the test that accompanies many of the images. He writes as if he is the flower speaking to you the viewer or to another flower in the photograph.
