Robert Castle

Robert Castle has spent over twenty years writing about film, with more than fifty pieces published in Bright Lights Film Journal since 2000 and over a hundred additional essays elsewhere, including his close readings of Stanley Kubrick, collected in The Interpretive Odyssey of Stanley Kubrick and The Monolith and Its Influences.

He studied English and earned a degree in the Writing Program at Penn State in the early seventies, briefly attended Columbia University School of the Arts, and spent time traveling and living on and off in Florence, Italy. For fifteen years he worked as a cook in a New Jersey seaside town before becoming a full-time teacher of History, Sociology, and Film.

His first three books, A Sardine on Vacation, a novel (Spuyten Duyvil); The End of Travel, a memoir (Ravenna Press); and Odd Pursuits, a collection of stories (Wild Child Publishing) , were all published in 2006. Since then, his work has appeared through Kindle and CreateSpace, including Berthcut & Sons, his first novel; a second story collection, Fits of Generosity; and a collection of three novellas, The Lies Commonly Agreed Upon. Other titles include Near Death Experiences (very short stories), con-Glom-er-a-tion (a novel in the form of a play, and sequel to Berthcut & Sons), The Hidden Life (Atmosphere Press), and MATE: A Novel in Twenty Games.
