Gregory Schaaf

We are best known for writing 17,000 Native American artists biographies in nine large hardback volumes. I am a retired Professor of Native American Studies from the University of California, Santa Barbara. After a distinguished teaching career, I retired early, moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, and dedicated my life to helping Native American people. I have worked as a historian for over 50 Native American Nations, helping to build tribal museums, tribal libraries, and tribal archives. My wife, Angie, photographed the artists and their artwork, the designed beautiful books in hardback editions. We have 16 books and hundreds of articles. We live in an old adobe hacienda in the middle of a pine forest. Indian Pueblos encircle us, and we often attend their feast days and ceremonial dances. We have many friends throughout the Indian World.
