William A. Therivel was born in Paris in 1928 from an Italo-French Valdôtain father, and an Austrian mother. He completed his first studies in 1955 with a degree of Doctor of Chemical Engineering from the Turin Polytechnic. From 1956 to 1986, he worked for Italian and American companies, as a business development specialist, in Italy, Iran, New York, France, Japan, Brazil, England, Belgium, Texas. His success in these assignments was also due to his fluency in English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish, and by his life long interest in the history, literature, sociology and psychology of many of these countries.
He expanded his studies in psychology with a degree of Doctor of Psychology (Developmental) from the University of Houston. As research associate, his areas of specialization are: personality, creativity, ethnopsycholgy, history, and literature in an interdisciplinary perspective, with several papers published on each of these subjects.
He is a frequent contributor to Creativity Research Journal, Journal of Social Behavior and Personality, Studi Medievali, and Rivista di Studi Italiani.
