Andreas Kalckhoff, born in Saaz (Bohemia) in 1944, grew up in Munich and now lives in Stuttgart. After studying history and earning his doctorate in Munich, he worked as an editor of a history journal and went to the University of Stuttgart as a research assistant in 1978. There he conducted research on historical anthropology. Since 1980 he has worked as a freelance journalist and publicist. He is mainly interested in the German Middle Ages, but also in British and American history. His dissertation on the emergence of nationalism was published under the title "Nacio Scottorum. Schottischer Regionalismus im Spätmittelalterr" (Nacio Scottorum. Scottish Regionalism in the Late Middle Ages).
