I am a cultural anthropologist and documentary filmmaker with a specialty in the Global African Diaspora. I have done fieldwork, lectured, and participated in intellectual and cultural events in most of Africa and the African Diaspora and have numerous scholarly and popular publications and documentaries through which I portray my experiences and knowledge of the African Diaspora.
I love sharing the fascinating experiences I lived in expected and unexpected places as I learned that the African Diaspora is global. I was excited and gratified to learn, beginning with my first adolescent journey to Central Africa, that my community still manifests elements of its rich African heritage and that we are an integral part of a larger, worldwide African Diasporan community. It’s a pleasure to convey knowledge and images from my decades of field research with people interested in these enlightening realities, including such topics as:
- Africans Making the Modern World
- Rewriting the Stories of Africans in the Americas
- Technology Transfers from Africa to the Americas
- Spirituality of African Origin in the Diaspora
- Diaspora Women as Priestesses & Queens
I was a Professor of Anthropology and Director of the Center for African and African American Studies, and held an endowed chair in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Texas at Austin, and I was a Distinguished Visiting Professor, Professor of Anthropology, and Director of the African Diaspora and the World Program at Spelman College.
