Christoph Lorey

Christoph Lorey is recognized worldwide as a teacher and scholar with wide-ranging interests in German Studies, Culture Studies, Linguistics, World Literature and Interdisciplinary Studies, as a dedicated editor of The International Fiction Review, and an avid reviewer of books. He is author of a book on family structures in the works of G.E. Lessing (1992), and a book on marriage in the works of Johann Wolfgang Goethe (1995). Christoph Lorey co-authored several studies: Analogon Rationis (1994) on J.W. Goethe and other German writers; Queering the Canon (1998, with John L. Plews) on Queer Theory, Gay and Lesbian film and writing in German; German Matters in Popular Culture (2000; Special Issue of Journal of Popular Culture, also with John L. Plews) on German Material Culture; and Interkulturelle Kompetenzen/Intercultural Literacies and German in the Classroom (2007, with John L. Plews and Caroline Rieger) on Intercultural Language Learning. His textbook A Guide to Reading German (co-authored with Marianne Eiselt, 2006) is specifically designed to enable English-speaking learners to read, and translate, a variety of German texts with the aid of a dictionary and translation software.

Chris Lorey provided both the integral organizations of his field of expertise and the University of New Brunswick, where he was a tenured Full Professor until his retirement in 2010, with distinguished service. Lorey was editor-in-chief of The International Fiction Review, a journal with a world-wide circulation and international readership. He was elected President of the Canadian Association of Teachers of German in 1997 and presided over the Atlantic Association of Teachers of German between 1994 and 1997. He was Director of Graduate Studies in German from 1994 to 2000 and served as Acting Chair of the Department of Culture and Language Studies in 2004 and 2005. He was a member of the university Senate between 1998 and 2001, and again between 2007 and 2009. In 2011, Christoph Lorey was awarded the President's Medal for outstanding service to the university.
