Alan D. Abbey

Alan D. Abbey is Director of Media and Internet Services at Shalom Hartman Institute, a pluralistic Jewish educational institute and think tank based in Jerusalem, Israel, with programs in Israel and North America for educators, university students, community leaders, rabbis, IDF officers, Israeli teachers and high school students, and non-Jewish clerics and scholars.

I moved to this position after a career in journalism that began in U.S. newspapers, continued through a stint as a Washington correspondent and as an editor, and then continued onto print and Internet journalism in Israel.

Israel positions have included Founder and Managing Director of ynetnews.com, the English division of Yedioth Ahronoth (Israel's largest newspaper). I developed and managed the website's news and advertising, e-commerce, syndication, and archives. I developed paid services online, SMS features, audio content, partnerships, and more.

Previously, I was Executive Vice President - Electronic Publishing at the Jerusalem Post, where I directed JPost.com, one of the world's leading newspaper websites, and steered the site into new and profitable areas of editorial and advertising services.

Separately, I have maintained a career as a speaker, university lecturer, and consultant on topics including Israel, media, and the Jewish world. In 2003, I authored the book, "Journey of Hope: The Story of Ilan Ramon, Israel's First Astronaut."

I am also Adjunct Professor of Journalism at National University of San Diego, CA, where I teach in the Master's Degree in Digital Media program. I conduct original research in Media Ethics and Jewish Journalism.
