I grew up among the farms and mountains of central Washington State and make my home now in the forests of New England. I am a graduate of the University of California, San Diego, and have spent many years living in different Deep South and Upper South communities. Far more a rural person than urban, I'm drawn to the countryside at personal as well as intellectual levels. To me, there's nothing more enjoyable than the sound of horses crunching on their hay in the early morning, or owls hooting in the early evening. It is a different quality of life, and one that deeply informs and shapes the kind of history I write.
