Katie N. Johnson is the Western College Endowed Professor and Professor of English at Miami University. She is author of Sisters in Sin: Brothel Drama in America (Cambridge University Press, 2006), Sex for Sale: Six Progressive-Era Brothel Drama Plays (University of Iowa Press, 2015), and Racing the Great White Way: Black Performance, Eugene O’Neill, and the Transformation of Broadway (University of Michigan Press, 2023). Racing the Great White Way was selected as a finalist for the Theatre Library Association’s book award and was listed on Playbill’s “8 Theatre Must Reads For July” and Broadway World’s Must Read Theatre Books. Johnson has received two National Endowment for the Humanities grants and a Getty Library Research Fellowship for her academic projects. She was also awarded the Outstanding Article Award from the Association for Theatre in Higher Education and the Gerald Kahan Prize by the American Society for Theatre Research. In addition to being an avid researcher, Johnson has also worked as a dramaturg on stages in London, California, and Ireland. While at Miami University, she has received the Philip Knox Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, the Distinguished Educator Award, and the English Department’s Professor of the Year Award. In 2024 Miami University awarded Johnson the Faculty Scholar Award for research excellence. Johnson is the immediate past president of the Eugene O’Neill Society. This May she will receive the O’Neill Society Medallion—a lifetime achievement award.
