Jim Stevens

Jim Stevens is an award winning international artist and sculptor … and he is legally blind. His personal story and art have been shared in over 50 media outlets around the country, including the PBS NewsHour, The Week, and The Saturday Evening Post.

His passion is helping artists and crafters through his books, classes and speaking engagements overcome obstacles, find their creativity and produce works that people want to own, have in their homes or even in their pockets.

With scrimshaw, he reveals that you don’t even need to know how to draw to create beautiful art, and if you can draw … you soon realize scrimshaw will awaken skills you can use to take your art to the next level.

Through his own struggles overcoming vision loss to become an internationally collected artist, Jim knows what it takes to overcome failure, succeed and experience the joy of creating art people love to own.

His works are in galleries, collected internationally and he has been honored as a registered Kennedy Center Artist in the affiliate program of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in both the visual and literary arts.

He is the creator of two acclaimed new painting techniques and has produced scrimshaw designs for Fenton, the international jewelry design studio based in New York City, and he is the master scrimshaw instructor for the National Rifle Association's Gunsmithing School.

He is often sought out by individuals and organizations for both commissioned paintings and museum quality scrimshaw restorations and repairs.

Jim is the author of: "Scrimshaw Techniques," "Advanced Scrimshaw Techniques," and "Powder Horns: Fabrication & Decoration." All of his books are written and designed with both the artist and crafter in mind.

Jim is a generous resource for artisans and invites owners of his books to contact him with questions or comments as they read and learn.
