Leo van Bergen (The Netherlands 1959) is a medical historian working at the VU-university medical centre at Amsterdam. He published several books most of them related to the topic of war and medicine. His PhD was about a history of the Red Cross (in English: The Severely Wounded First? The Dutch Red Cross and the question of war and peace 1867-1945 (Erasmus Publishing Rotterdam 1994)). His medical history of World War I (Zacht en Eervol [Sweet and Honourable]) received a lot of praise and is translated as Before my Helpless Sight. Suffering, dying and military medicine at the Western Front 1914-1918 (Ashgate [Medical History in Context] 2009). Van Bergen is member of the editorial board of the peer reviewed magazine Medicine, Conflict and Survival.
