Gelien Matthews

Gelien Matthews is currently a lecturer at the University of the West Indies St Augustine Campus. She has been teaching history at this institution continuously since 2006. She has taught the History of the United States of America, History of the West Indies, Women and Gender in the History of the British West Indies, Caribbean Economic History and Latin American History to 1910.

Matthews has five major publications;Caribbean Slave Revolts and the British Abolitionist Movement published in 2006 by Louisiana State University Press, History of the Church of the Nazarene Trinidad and Tobago published in 2008 by the Nazarene District Trinidad and Tobago, The Church of the Nazarene in Four of the Windward Islands published by Westbow Press in 2018, Historical Dictionary of Trinidad and Tobago in conjunction with Rita Pemberton et al published by Rowman and Littlefield in 2018 and Slavery and Freedom in the Caribbean: From Colonialism to Emancipation published by Rowman and Littlefield in 2019. Additionally, she has published a number of articles in various books and journals on the history of black and white British anti-slavery such as "The Other Side of Slave Revolts", “Trinidad: A Model Colony for British Slave Trade Abolition” and “Toppling the Colonizers in Trinidad and Tobago”.
