Anthony Paul Bale

Anthony Bale is Professor of Medieval and Renaissance English (1954) at the University of Cambridge and a Professorial Fellow of Girton College, Cambridge. He is a Fellow of the British Academy. He has published widely on various medieval topics, including Christian-Jewish relations, the poetry of Chaucer and Lydgate, the cult of St Edmund of East Anglia, travel and pilgrimage. He has published translations of Mandeville's 'Book of Marvels and Travels' and 'The Book of Margery Kempe'. His Travel Guide to the Middle Ages: the World Through Medieval Eyes has been translated into more than 20 languages; The New Yorker wrote that 'Wisdom fills the pages of this immensely entertaining history' and The Times (London) described it as ' a delightfully captivating journey across the medieval world' in 'perfect prose.' He was awarded the Philip Leverhulme Prize and has held fellowships at Harvard, The Huntington Library, the University of Melbourne, and elsewhere. He lives in London and Cambridge.
