Janet Shipley Hawks was born in 1940 and raised in Kansas City in a family where sewing and creating were a way of life. As a very young child she hung on her mother's back as she sewed on a treadle sewing machine, a way for mother to know where she at all times! After graduating from the University of Kansas in 1962 she began a 25 year career in Occupational Therapy working mostly in rehabilitation and always exploring fiber techniques that were new to her. The need for a gift for artist friends in 2003 led to the development of "Sculpted Threads" and the resulting book. She continues to explore this technique and teach it to others.
