Born in California, raised in the wilderness of Alaska, D. Bruce Means (1941- ) is President and Executive Director of the Coastal Plains Institute and Land Conservancy and Courtesy Professor in the Department of Biological Science, Florida State University, Tallahassee, Florida. He is a triple alumnus of FSU, receiving his Ph.D. in 1975. Director of Tall Timbers Research Station from 1976-1984, he founded CPI in 1984 where he has served as President and Executive Director to the present. A field ecologist with more than 50 years' experience, his main research interests center on fire ecology, longleaf pine ecosystem, tropical biology, tepui ecology, biogeography, pond ecology, amphibians and reptiles, and rare and endangered species. His field research and explorations in the southeastern U. S., South America, and Australia have been featured in several National Geographic Television, BBC TV, and PBS documentary films. He has published more than 295 scientific research papers, contract reports, and popular articles and is author of ten books including Priceless Florida and Florida, Magnificent Wilderness about the ecology of Florida, and Stalking the Plumed Serpent and Other Adventures in Herpetology. His long-awaited book, Diamonds in the Rough, Natural History of the Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake, is now published.
