Tim J. Anderson

Tim Anderson teaches at Old Dominion University in the Department of Communication and Theatre Arts. His research focus is on what makes music popular. His 2006 manuscript, Making Easy Listening: Cultural Material Issues in American Recorded Music and Sound, 1948-1964 (University of Minnesota), explores a structural shift in US popular music economies as it researched some of the changes that arose as a consequence of moving from a system of live performances to one structured around the production and exchange of recordings. His second manuscript, Popular Music in a Digital Music Economy: Practices, Problems and Solutions for an Emerging Service Industry, is due to be published in late 2013. His work has appeared in a number of journals and edited volumes.

More importantly, Anderson lives with his beautiful wife, his stepchildren and a couple of spoiled cats in Norfolk, Virginia. When he isn't collecting cheap vinyl or working to improve his poor guitar skills, he can be seen with friends and family trying to figure out important questions of the universe such as "What is my cat thinking about now?" and "Why is Little Eva's 'The Locomotion' the greatest record ever made?" (hint, he believes it has something to do with the handclaps).
