Hetty van Gurp has had a long and diverse career as a public school teacher, administrator and a university professor. In addition to her work in education, Hetty has also served as a member of the Canadian Federal Human Rights Tribunal. Hetty's contributions have been honoured with a number of awards, including the YMCA Peace Medal, the Nova Scotia Principal of Distinction Award, the Crime Prevention Society of Nova Scotia Award, the Queen's Jubilee Medal and the Order of Nova Scotia. Hetty was named a Canadian hero by Readers' Digest, Today's Parent and TIME magazine. Hetty was honoured with an honourary Doctorate of Civil Law degree by Saint Mary's University. She is the author of several books on peace education and creative arts.
