His native language in English and he used to be reasonably fluent in French, until that problem was cured by attending an English preparatory school in Berkshire. More recently, after eight years of learning Arabic, he is on chapter four of his textbook (the wonderful Schulz, Krahl & Reuschel), so he expects to be learning Arabic well into his seventies.
