David Pollard

David Pollard is a barrister at Wilberforce Chambers in Lincoln's Inn in London. He previously practised as a solicitor and was a partner in the London office of law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP for 25 years until the end of April 2015. He specialises in advising on pensions, insolvency and employment law issues.

His technical excellence and ability to communicate complex issues have made him a renowned author on pensions law. His book "Pensions, Contracts and Trusts: Legal Issues on Decision Making" (Bloomsbury Professional) came out in 2020. It deals with the issues on legal review of discretionary decisions, focusing on proper purposes and the "Braganza duties".

In 2016 he published the 6th edition of: "Corporate Insolvency: Employment and Pension Rights" (Bloomsbury Professional), together with the first edition of "Employment Law and Pensions" (Bloomsbury). In 2013 he published the first edition of "The Law of Pension Trusts" (OUP).

He co-edited the books "Freshfields on Corporate Pensions Law" 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015, written by the Freshfields London pensions team.

He has also contributed to and edited other books, and is co-editor of the quarterly journal Trust Law International.

Awards/positions

Chair of the Association of Pension Lawyers, 2001 to 2003.

Former vice-chair of the Industrial Law Society.

Awarded the Association of Pension Lawyers' Wallace Medal in 1998 and in 2015 for excellence in communicating pensions issues.

Career to date

David joined Freshfields in 1982 and was a partner from 1990 to 2015. David worked for the firm in Singapore for three years in the 1980s.
