‘You’re never too old to make things happen or be creative’ are terms often spoken by George Green, who certainly practices what he preaches! From writing more than fifteen books and working on screenplays, to studying acting at the Beverly Hills Playhouse and then appearing in movies and network television shows - these are just a few of George’s accomplishments.
George Green spent thirty-eight years of his life working for ABC Radio in Los Angeles, California. He retired in 1996 after a brilliant career at KABC, and then founded an advertising agency as well as a talent management and media marketing consulting company. Many of the talk personalities who George hired are still major superstars at some of America’s great Talk Stations.
While his career background may seem intense, his personal life follows suit. George, who will be turning eighty-five in May, 2017, is an avid golfer, water-skier, snow-skier, and a serious Dodger fan with two World Championship rings of his own, both given to him by Peter O’Malley in 1981 and 1988. Still learning the definition of the word ‘semi-retirement’, George is much like a firecracker sparking off new and colorful ideas daily.
It all started for him in Los Angeles at ABC Radio. When George joined the sales department of KABC-AM in 1960, the outlet had just launched a startling new radio format no one had ever heard before - All Talk. Within five years George became General Sales Manager, and was promoted to President and General Manager of KABC Talk Radio fourteen years later.
During his seventeen years as the President and General Manager of KABC, George gained a reputation as one of the top sales motivators in the country, for managing a radio station who cared about the community of Los Angeles, and for creating dozens of major community events benefiting the city of Los Angeles. He also had an editorial responsibility which saw him write and air over two-thousand editorials, heard by millions of KABC’s listeners in Southern California.
Under George’s leadership KABC made radio industry history, instituting programming and marketing innovations that changed the business. KABC became the largest sales revenue producer of America’s seven-thousand radio stations; a marketing machine that commanded an audience of one-million listeners.
Dr. Toni Grant, Dr. David Viscott, Larry Elder, Ken Minyard, Ray Briem, Merrill Schindler, Tom Hawkins, Stu Nahan, Leon (Motorman) Kaplan, Elmer Dills, Kelly Lange, Doug Stephen, Dennis Prager and Michael Jackson all joined KABC during George’s tenure there.
As a result George won numerous business, community, and media industry awards - among them being named Executive of the Year by Southern California’s Executive Magazine in 1987. When his career in radio ended in 1996, George found it difficult to sit back and watch life float by. Founding a talent management company as well as an advertising agency wasn’t enough to satisfy him, thus his thrust into a short career as an actor.
George enrolled in the Beverly Hills Playhouse intending to be an actor. His teacher thought that at his age, sixty-five, there ought to have been lots of senior citizen parts available to him. After a year of studying acting George did some work in both movies and Network Television. His brief acting career saw him play a role in the movie ‘Resurrecting the Champ’ with Samuel L. Jackson. In Television he had a small role in the sitcom ‘The King of Queens’. He also played smaller roles in commercials, and was noted for his appearance in commercials for Honda Motor Cars.
After excelling in each field he chose, George believed it was time to put his creative mind to work and began writing books. Reflections, Out Of the Spotlight and I Love Loving You were the first three books written by George. Writing children’s books became his passion and, at this date, he has self-published twelve remarkable children’s books which are all illustrated by a talented illustrator in Indonesia, edited by an editor who lives in South Africa, and designed by a book designer who lives in Serbia. Communicating by Skype has opened the doors to true global communication by authors of all kinds.
‘Out Of The Spotlight’ is a compilation of over forty-five interviews with some of Hollywood’s top performers, producers and radio stars, as well as some of America’s most recognized entrepreneurs and professionals from various industries. This book was written with the purpose of providing insight to those who find their own spotlights fading, offering outstanding advice from the interviewees themselves on how to make it through transitions in life.
His twelve children’s books are aimed at young children, and all bear an important message; everyone is blessed with a unique talent, even if it’s not too obvious at first. Based on lovable animal characters who are unable to do what is expected of them, his children’s books include Lenny, The Lion Who Couldn’t Roar; Softy, The Bird Who Couldn’t Fly; Cathy, The Cow Who Couldn’t Moo; Fluffy, The Cat Who Couldn’t Meow - among many others (visit georgegreen.net).
Aside from keeping on his toes, George lives a full life between Rancho Mirage, California, and Lake Arrowhead - with his S.O. partner, Myrna, surrounded by great friends and family. No two days have ever been the same, nor will they ever be for George Green.
