As a young feminist student and then as a teacher, parent and trade unionist, Pregs Govender learnt about the power of love, courage and insubordination during our struggle against a patriarchal capitalist Apartheid state. Her understanding was deepened by managing the Women’s National Coalition (WNC) campaign for a women’s charter and by serving as MP and Chair of Parliaments Committee on Women during 8 years of SAs first Democratic Parliament and later as Commissioner and Deputy Chair of the South African Human Rights Commission. Pregs resigned from Parliament after being the only MP to oppose SAs now infamous arms deal in the Defence Budget Vote itself and after chairing public hearings that broke the silence on treatment for HIV in the ANC Caucus. In the context of the hate, greed and fear of oppressive systems that often permeate our hearts, Pregs writes, educates and speaks to incite insubordination. She is inspired by a life-long practice of yoga and writing, her three now adult children, by humanity and nature’s abundant beauty.
